The Silvanus Thompson Medal for 2014 was awarded to BIR member Dr Edwin Aird at UKRO in October. Dr Aird delivered the Silvanus Thompson memorial lecture entitled The impact of quality control on clinical trials’ prior to receiving the medal, which was presented by BIR chair of the radiotherapy physics SIG and vice chair of UKRO Andy Beavis.
Director of medical physics at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre until his recent retirement, Dr Aird has written a plethora of published manuscripts, book chapters and lectures. His clinical career started at the Newcastle General Hospital in 1967 following his academic training at Newcastle University. He left to become head of radiotherapy physics at St Barts in 1985 and then moved to the position of head of medical physics in 1988.
