Njord Medtech will be demonstrating its unique patented Atle 180 patient transfer device at UKIO. This device eliminates the need for manual lifting while providing a smooth, controlled patient transfer between, for example, beds and CT scanners. Only one or two radiographers need to be present to conduct the transfer.
The solution has been developed by Barbro Cagner, a radiographer and subsequently radiology manager at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden. She identified the health and injury risks to radiographers due to the high number of manual transfers they completed on a daily basis.
According to Njord Medtech, evidence recently gathered from acute radiology departments in the Nordics found that staff and patients reported benefits when using the Atle 180 for horizontal patient transfer. It allowed radiographers to increase focus on patients and overall clinical time in the department by eliminating the need to wait for additional support to complete the conventional manual transfer.
Feedback from radiographers following first trials reported that many of their health issues quickly improved when no longer doing manual lifting.
Posters from The Society of Radiographers posters reminds radiographers and other staff that 40 per cent of at-work injuries are caused by incorrect or dangerous manual handling of patients. Njord Medtech plans to keep reducing this figure by eliminating the need for manual lifting in radiology departments across the UK.
