BIR bestows prestigious awards on leading names in imaging and healthcare

The BIR/Aidence Mayneord Memorial Award was presented to senior strategy advisor in medicine at the University of Nottingham Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam. Prior to receiving the award, Sir Jonathan gave the eponymous lecture titled ‘Science, policy and leadership during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic’.

In his engaging talk, Sir Jonathan explained how the Government and science community faced and overcame the biggest health challenge of a lifetime, coped with the challenges and responses at different times of the pandemic, how teamwork and collaboration were crucially important and explored what lessons we can take into the future. He emphasised the importance of British science and government working together and the crucial role of the UK vaccines task force. He concluded the talk with some advice on leadership and strategy, together with an overview of the functional anatomy of the infamous Number 10 press briefings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “Every patient admitted to hospital with COVID-19 has required medical imaging at least once and often on multiple occasions. It was an honour to deliver this eponymous lecture to the BIR and I hope that in doing so, it recognises the extraordinary contribution made by this professional community during the greatest public health challenge of a lifetime.”

Aidence sponsors this award, which is named in memory of medical physicist Professor W V Mayneord.
