The BIR Sir Godfrey Hounsfield Memorial Lecture was delivered by Professor Adrian Brady during The British Institute of Radiology Annual Congress in November. The award was presented by BIR president Professor Stephen Keevil after the talk titled ‘The 21st century radiologist: optimising relevance (while staying sane)’.

Professor Brady is clinical professor of radiology at University College Cork, Ireland, and consultant radiologist at Mercy University Hospital, Cork. He is past president and current chair of the board of directors for the European Society of Radiology 2023-24.

In his keynote talk, Professor Brady gave a salutary and, at times, light-hearted exploration of the radiologist of the future, with references to his wide experience as a radiologist in Ireland and Canada. He stressed that the role of the radiologist has moved from being peripheral to now being a central participant in multidisciplinary care and this has brought the challenges of high demands for 24/7 services, lack of capacity and burnout. He used the blockbuster movies of 2023 Oppenheimer and Barbie as popular cultural references to positives and negatives in radiology, raising a smile from the audience, as well as posing some poignant questions and messages about the value of the role of radiologists in the 21st century.

Professor Brady said: “It was a great pleasure and honour to deliver the Godfrey Hounsfield Memorial Lecture. The BIR is an exciting and dynamic organisation and it was wonderful to be able to participate in its multidisciplinary educational activities.”
