St Joseph's Hospital CT study day

St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport, hosted its first CT Study Day in June, welcoming specialist radiographers from across Wales and beyond. The event marked the hospital’s third annual study day for radiographers, following two MRI-focused CPD events, and was held in recognition of the installation of a CT suite featuring a Canon Aquilion One/Insight Edition scanner and Bayer’s Centargo Medrad power injector.

Specialist radiographer and event organiser Laura Taylor said: “Events of this nature are an essential component of ongoing professional development, yet in-person educational opportunities remain limited in Wales.”

Sponsored by Canon Medical Systems and Bayer, the event provided delegates with a day of quality education, networking opportunities and access to St Joseph’s advanced diagnostic imaging facilities. The programme featured a line-up of distinguished speakers from across the UK. Consultant radiographer Stuart Baines from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board delivered an insightful session on CT head reporting, drawing on his wide clinical experience.

Consultant radiologist Dr John Dreisbach focused on advanced and emergency cardiac CT in a session featuring high resolution 3D reconstructions and a range of complex clinical case studies.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Kartik Hariharan shared his perspective on the role of CT imaging in preoperative planning and surgical precision, particularly for ankle replacement surgery.

Dr Sue Kearney, a consultant radiologist from Lancashire and contributor to Channel 5’s Cause of Death programme, provided an engaging presentation on post-mortem CT, highlighting its growing relevance in forensic imaging.

Cardiovascular imaging was further explored by Dr Obaid from Morriston Hospital, who delivered a comprehensive overview of cardiac pathology. His presentation reinforced the ongoing collaborative relationship between St Joseph’s and NHS Wales cardiac services.

Presentations from Canon and Bayer were followed by a tour of the department.

Taylor commented: “Beyond supporting CPD, events like this foster cross-organisational collaboration, stimulate service innovation, and provide a platform to showcase the exceptional work taking place at St Joseph’s. We extend our sincere thanks to our speakers, sponsors, the wider team, and all those who joined us – especially those who gave up their personal time to attend.”

The team aims to offer more CPD events, including evening lectures and half-day workshops.
