Derriford chooses extremity MR scanner to reduce waiting lists

Radiographers Tim Relf, Ian Gow and MRI lead radiographer Christine Heales.
Thorough research and in situ testing has led Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust to select an Esaote O-scan MRI scanner. Lee Arkins, contracts manager for capital, estates and facilities, explained that the aim was to improve services for patients, as well as help the trust meet its targets and objectives. “The main focus for our radiologists, and for us, was image quality,” he said. “We had to be sure that the scanner would do the job we needed so we had a scanner delivered on trial, and we linked with a hospital in the north west of England to make sure that radiologists were completely happy with the images. They were very happy with it.”
Consultant radiologist and service line director imaging Dr Abdul Gafoor said: “The Esaote MR is a very useful addition to our department. It is easy to use with many good features and has a dedicated sequence for cartilage and dedicated coils for the extremities. Our patients appreciate the quieter, less claustrophobic scanner, which provides us with good image quality and with only slightly longer scan times.”
