Doncaster Royal’s trauma transfer board is the right tool

Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s A&E department has received a TraumaTransfer system from Wolverson X-ray Limited. The company says the device is widely used in Europe and is being used in more and more hospitals in the UK. Its board eliminates potentially hazardous log rolls and, while improving patient safety, it reduces the risk of injury to staff in manual handling situations.
After arriving from the ambulance, the patient can be quickly and safely secured onto the padded board. The system also uses a head cradle that eliminates the use of cumbersome head blocks, and once in CT the patient and board are transferred by sliding the mattress across from the trolley on the CT table. This reduces the time spent in CT, and also reduces the number of staff required.
Consultant in emergency medicine Khairul Shahdan said: “After a brief trial we concluded that the system was the right tool to assist us in managing patients with suspected spinal injuries needing CT scans. Having purchased these the next step is training our staff to use them more often for those that meet the criteria. We are looking forward to Wolverson producing a video to enable our staff to acquire this training via an e-learning route.”
