In June, London’s Queen Elizabeth II Centre played host to one of the most anticipated MRI safety events of the year – Dr Emanuel Kanal’s fifth European MRMD/MRSO Course.

From June 16-18, the course united international attendees in a three-day exploration of MRI safety, along with networking opportunities with peers and industry, all set against the iconic backdrop of Westminster.

Over 18 hours of lectures covered the full spectrum of MRI safety challenges – from theoretical underpinnings to real-world case application. Topics included: static magnetic fields, radio frequency exposure, time-varying gradient fields, and cryogen safety. Attendees explored clinical low field device assessment patient screening for 1.5 T/3T systems, and real-world decision-making using the “Will you scan this patient?” framework – giving professionals practical tools to assess, manage and mitigate risk across diverse MRI environments.

Dr Emanuel Kanal reflected: “This isn’t just about teaching MRI safety – it’s about completely reshaping how professionals think, reason, and apply their knowledge in high-stakes clinical scenarios. I want attendees to walk away with the confidence to make the safest decisions for their patients, every single time.”

Barbara Nugent, founder of MRI Safety Matters and course organiser, emphasised the event’s collaborative spirit: “Bringing together such a diverse community of radiographers, clinical scientists, physicists and clinicians from across the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and beyond is truly inspiring. Seeing everyone share insights to improve patient safety reminds me why we do this.”

Networking wasn’t confined to the lecture theatre; it ignited across every break, lunch table and hallway conversation, connecting MRI professionals from five continents in a shared pursuit of excellence.

The organisers also extended heartfelt thanks to the event sponsors, whose support and innovation continue to drive the tools and education that underpin progress in MRI safety worldwide.

Known for his dynamic teaching style and ability to challenge assumptions, Dr Emanuel Kanal urged attendees to approach the course with fresh eyes: “Forget what you think you know about MRI safety – just for a little while. Let me rebuild that understanding from the ground up so you walk away not just informed but truly equipped.”

Attendee feedback highlighted the course’s transformational impact:

  • We just said it’s like a TED talk for MRI – dynamic, fast-paced, and packed with insights you won’t get anywhere else. Dr Kanal hits you with real-world scenarios, challenging you to rethink everything you thought you knew about MRI safety.”
  • “It’s inspiring, it’s engaging, and it leaves you hungry to apply what you’ve learned the moment you return to the department.”
