Frimley Park contrast-enhanced mammography

Following the replacement of two mammography systems in 2017 with Hologic technology, Frimley Park Hospital breast unit has now launched contrast-enhanced mammography using Hologic’s I-View software.

Lead mammographer Mary Bourak said: “We are currently using contrast mammography as an alternative to MRI for neoadjuvant patients. We acquire contrast-enhanced mammograms prior to commencement of oncological treatment, at the midpoint and upon completion, to monitor tumour response. Contrast-enhanced mammography is also performed in the assessment of patients with lobular breast cancer, patients who are under 40 with a positive diagnosis of breast cancer and in patients with mammographically occult breast tumours. We have found the Hologic software to be simple and easy to use and the procedures are well tolerated by our patients.”

Consultant radiologist Dr Pippa Skippage added: “Our service is currently radiographer-led, taking place in the mammography room. The use of contrast mammography allows us to collect additional information beyond a standard mammogram and enables the use of a single modality for digital mammography, breast tomosynthesis, tomosynthesis biopsy and contrast imaging.”
