Fully digital mammography service in Edinburgh

Hologic breast health sales specialist Lynne Callan, centre, with SESBSC radiology manager Julie Carmichael and clinical lead Janet Clarke.

According to Hologic, Scotland is leading the way in the implementation of digital mammography in its programme due to be completed in 2015.  The South East Scotland Breast Screening Centre (SESBSC) at Ardmillan House in Edinburgh is the first screening centre in Scotland to provide a fully digital mammography service with the acquisition of eight Hologic Selenia Dimensions digital mammography systems, four in static environments and four in mobiles.

The switch to digital technology, part of a national initiative, allows assessment to immediately follow imaging, so reducing recall rates.  SESBSC’s system also includes a Hologic Affirm upright biopsy system to further reduce patient stress by minimising delay in the investigation of suspicious lesions following imaging.
