Rosenfield iCode

Across the East of England (EoE), radiology educators have long been committed to delivering high-quality regional teaching despite the complexity of coordinating large-scale training programmes. Preparing a single teaching session traditionally required significant time investment, with cases needing to be identified, anonymised, organised, and shared across multiple systems before learning could even begin.

Today, that preparation process has been transformed. Teaching sessions that once required days of advance work can now be prepared in a fraction of the time—saving more than eight hours per session and allowing educators to focus on teaching rather than administration.

Supporting one of England’s largest regional imaging academies

The EoE Imaging Academy is one of the largest regional radiology training initiatives in England, spanning 13 NHS trusts and supporting imaging education for a population of approximately 6.2 million people. Delivering consistent, high-quality training across such a wide geography requires robust, scalable infrastructure—particularly for teaching file management and assessment delivery.

Historically, educational cases were stored within clinical PACS environments that prioritised patient care rather than structured education. While effective for diagnosis, these systems required educators to manually extract, anonymise, and prepare cases for teaching, making regional sharing and standardisation time intensive.

Streamlining teaching workflows with secure automation

Rosenfield Health’s iCode Teaching Files (TFS), implemented alongside the iCode Teaching and Clinical Trial Export (TCE) gateway, was introduced to simplify and standardise this process. Installed directly within each trust’s network, iCode TCE connects securely to PACS at source, automatically anonymising patient data before export and eliminating the need for multi-stage manual preparation.

What was previously a nine-step workflow can now be completed with a single action. As a result, average preparation time for teaching sessions has reduced by approximately 78%, delivering substantial efficiency gains without disrupting existing clinical systems.

This streamlined workflow was developed collaboratively with the EoE Imaging Academy to align with established regional teaching practices, ensuring the system supported educators’ needs while maintaining NHS-grade governance and security.

Enabling region-wide assessment and access

Consultant radiologist at NNUH, Dr Hameed Rafiee, commented: “We have been very pleased with how well the system has performed during our region-wide exams set up by the Virtual Imaging Academy. Support from the Rosenfield team has also been excellent, ensuring that the tests operate reliably and providing a seamless experience for both staff and candidates.”

Within months of deployment, the platform now supports 577 registered users, providing access to a shared archive of over 1,870 anonymised studies. These studies underpin 500 test bank questions and 550 quiz cases, supporting FRCR preparation and structured assessment across the region.

The platform integrates with 13 PACS systems from six different vendors, enabling seamless access for trainees and educators without requiring changes to existing Trust infrastructure.

Expanding access and educational equity

Remote, secure access to teaching materials has improved engagement and consistency across the region. Trainees can now access the same high-quality cases and formal assessments regardless of location, reducing unnecessary travel and supporting a more equitable learning experience.

Looking ahead

The EoE Imaging Academy’s teaching archive is projected to exceed 3,000 anonymised studies within the next 24 months, positioning it as one of the most comprehensive regional radiology teaching resources in the UK. As the archive grows, it will continue to support structured education, assessment, and collaboration at scale.
