Kanal’s European safety course returns to London to inspire MRI leaders

Submitted by Barbara Nugent, MRI safety advisor.

May saw the return of Dr Emanuel Kanal’s internationally respected MR Safety Officer/MR Medical Director (MRSO/MRMD) course to London. Dr Kanal’s reputation as a teacher and his contributions to MRI safety education and training brought more than 160 delegates to this, the second such course, organised by Barbara Nugent of MRI Safety Matters.

Delayed by multiple pandemic postponements, Nugent emphasised that the delegates’ commitment to attending was truly appreciated, as was their dedication to learning in order to best serve their patients’ needs.

The need for standardised MRI safety education has been amply demonstrated by MRI Safety Matters (1,2) and, following demand from the 2019 event, Nugent again hosted the American Board of MR Safety MRSO/MRMD/MRSE examinations. She commented: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to promote best practice. By learning more about MRI safety concerns and how to mitigate the risks and hazards, as well as testing individuals’ MRI safety knowledge, this may all positively impact on MRI safety practice everywhere.”

The course is primarily aimed at radiographers and radiologists, but physicists, clinical scientists and other MR specialists attended too, with delegates from the UK and Ireland as well as Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, India, the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. There were also returnees, many of whom are now MRSO accredited and who generously acted as an additional source of support over the two and a half days for MRSO examinees. As a result of positive feedback, plans are underway to bring the course back to the UK in June next year.

Attendee comments included: “Learnt so much and feel more confident on MRI safety matters;” “an amazing course, it was so well organised;” “really demystified the subject for me, found it engaging and relevant to practice;” “Kanal’s enthusiastic lecturing style is inspirational;” and “feel empowered to spread MR safety information within our unit.”

This was a unique learning experience to promote best practice. New friendships were made between delegates and fostered with industry partners. The venue was only made possible by the generosity of sponsors and MRI Safety Matters would like to thank Canon Medical Systems, Guerbet Laboratories, GE Healthcare, Probo Medical, Kopp Development, Siemens Healthineers, Pearl Technology and Sharon Services for their support.
