Students from multiple specialities worked together in the major incident recreation.

A major incident exercise staged at the University of the West of England (UWE) Glenside Campus in February simulated a major car crash involving a number of casualties.  The multi-professional activity involved paramedic, nursing and radiography students and staff as well as students from the BA journalism programme, who covered the event for their weekly news day simulation exercise.  This included filming and recording interviews for radio and TV bulletins throughout the day.

Head of department Viv Gibbs said: “This was an excellent opportunity for our students to experience what happens in a real emergency situation, and to practice their responses under the watchful eyes of their supervisors.  They had to think on their feet and put all the lessons they had learnt in the classroom into practice, in a very realistic, demanding situation.

“Working across professional boundaries was a great experience and provided our students with opportunities to improve their communication skills and understand what other professionals experience in their roles.”
