Professor Dr Pietsch is recognised for research into innovative contrast agents in radiology
The German Roentgen Society awarded the Hermann Rieder Medal 2026 to Professor Dr Hubertus Pietsch in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the research, development and safe use of modern contrast agents in radiology. Through his work at the interface of research and clinical application, he has shaped a field that is central to diagnostic imaging.
As head of MRI and CT contrast media research at Bayer in Berlin and an adjunct professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, Professor Pietsch combines academic excellence with long-standing experience in industrial research. His scientific work on pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and safety, particularly of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents, has contributed to a better understanding and evidence-based assessment of topics such as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and potential gadolinium presence. In periods of intense scientific and regulatory debate, his work has provided important guidance for clinical practice and international standards.
In addition, his development of new contrast agents including low dose options has provided key impetus for the advancement of imaging.
