A £1.5 million charity-funded MRI scanner unit at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre was officially opened by Tim Farron MP, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Radiotherapy, during a special event in September.
The MRI unit was paid for by charity Paul Strickland Scanner Centre and delivers more precise radiotherapy treatment planning for cancer patients, reduced waiting times and an increase in the number of people who are able to have a scan each day. The scanner is a Siemens Magnetom Aera and has a wider opening, making scans easier for large patients or those who have claustrophobia.
Farron said: “The improved imaging that the new MRI unit will provide ensures that radiotherapy treatment can be more targeted, efficient and effective. Patients will have fewer side effects, improved survival chances and a better quality of life because of this.”
