Patients’ questions answered in AXREM’s supportive radiotherapy video

AXREM radiotherapy video

AXREM has released a YouTube video called What is radiotherapy treatment like? A patient journey, created to support patients who are navigating cancer treatment. It features Andy Tudor, who shares his experience of receiving radiotherapy for a second brain tumour, providing a reminder of why understanding and emotional support are essential in every step of the treatment journey. He said: “This would have been incredibly helpful to me after I was told I needed radiotherapy. The lack of patient centred information added to the real anxiety about what to expect before, during and after treatment.” The video also features expert contributions from members of AXREM’s radiotherapy group, who offer clinical and professional perspectives and insights that help demystify radiotherapy and reinforce the importance of patient-centred care.

David Kynaston, convenor of the AXREM Radiotherapy Special Focus Group said: “Radiotherapy plays a vital role in cancer treatment, but can feel like a large step into the unknown for many patients following a cancer diagnosis. With treatment techniques, machines and devices differing depending on cancer types, it’s important to help patients understand some of the things to expect. As members of AXREM, our shared goal is to make radiotherapy as accessible, effective and patient-focused as possible. The creation of this video with Andy is something that we felt would act as an important step towards improving access and awareness for anyone who may face the prospect of a cancer diagnosis in the future.”

“We encourage anyone reading this or who has watched the video to please share with anyone preparing for radiotherapy, it could be the reassurance they need.”

Sally Edgington, AXREM chief executive officer said: “This video is a powerful example of what happens when our members come together with purpose and compassion. Radiotherapy can feel overwhelming, and patients deserve clarity, empathy, and support, not just clinical excellence.

“I’m incredibly proud of Andy Tudor for sharing his story so bravely, and grateful to our radiotherapy group: Dan Baines, Stephanie Elliot, and David Kynaston for lending their voices and expertise. This is AXREM at its best: collaborative, human, and deeply committed to making a difference.

“If this video helps even one person feel less alone, more informed, and more empowered, then we’ve done something truly meaningful.”
