Clonbrusk Primary Care Centre, in Athlone, Co Westmeath has installed a DigitalDiagnost HP wireless x-ray system from Philips Healthcare.  The centre, which was officially opened last year by minister of state with responsibility for primary care Alex White, TD, will provide all health and social care services at one location to meet the needs of a population of approximately 24,000.  It will offer a primary, secondary and tertiary service.

Radiology services manager at Mullingar Hospital Andrew Kiely said: “The Philips DigitalDiagnost provides Athlone with a state-of-the-art imaging system, located in its newly-opened primary care centre in Clonbrusk.  This makes Athlone the only town in the country with a radiology service located in a primary care centre.”

“This flexible equipment will allow patients to receive higher quality diagnostic imaging using significantly lower doses of radiation than was previously possible.  The images are linked directly to the radiology reporting service at Mullingar Hospital, allowing for rapid assessment and reporting.  In addition, the system is fully compatible with the National Integrated Medical Imaging System (NIMIS), allowing patients’ images to be clinically accessible in all NIMIS hospitals across the country.”
