Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow becomes the first hospital in the UK to receive the all-new Sonosite LX

Sonosite launched their all-new, premium point-of-care ultrasound system on September 26, 2022 in the UK. Since then, it has been trialled in many departments by doctors and clinicians on the front line of health, to gain valuable feedback.
One month later on October 26, 2022, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow became the first hospital in the UK to order Sonosite LX for their anaesthetic department, and since then they have been using it regularly with positive outcomes. Sonosite LX has been added to their fleet of point-of-care ultrasound systems which also includes the Sonosite PX.
“The key aspects of decision to purchase Sonosite LX has been developed on the trust of Sonosite PX. We trialled Sonosite PX at our institution and it received five-star reviews for image clarity, adjustability and ease of use for regional anaesthesia (RA). Sonosite LX has the benefit of the familiar user interface of Sonosite PX, with impressive image clarity while maintaining the ethos of being easy to use,” says Dr Iain Thomson, consultant anaesthetist, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
Dr Thomson goes on to say: “We see a lot of chest wall trauma so I’m looking forward to using the brand-new, higher frequency C10-3 curved probe for paraspinal blocks. I’m planning to formalise an awake breast surgery service which would lend itself well to this probe for paravertebral blockade. The large image and usability will help improve the quality and availability of the full range of RA, whether using for awake surgery or perioperative analgesia.”
“We plan to use the Sonosite LX and Sonosite PX primarily as our RA machines. The outstanding image clarity of both systems will lend themselves to the more difficult cases in the block room, and we have transthoracic echo capability on Sonosite LX for perioperative use.”
In the future, we are considering acquiring the transoesophageal ultrasound transducer (T8-3), which may provide valuable information for the management of frail major surgical patients we see.”
