X-ray protection has come a long way over five decades

Kenex and RAD Magazine have been close allies for many years. My father Ken and Mechel’s father Dave were, and still are, firm friends. Back when they were both starting out in business, they would support each other with a listening ear over a drink and now probably discuss how Mechel and I are doing having taken up the reins on each respective business. Over the years there have been frequent catch-ups at exhibitions and golf days where fond memories have been made.

Over the past 50 years, x-ray protection has come a long way, making the working environment much safer and more comfortable. In the early days, radiation safety was more basic. Lead aprons were heavy and often uncomfortable, and shielding practices weren’t as strictly enforced. Today, thanks to advancements in technology and a deeper understanding of radiation’s long-term effects, safety standards have significantly improved. Kenex supplies internationally to many of the leading OEMs that now supply radiation shielding as standard when fitting out new interventional radiology suites, helping to further reduced unnecessary exposure.

Digital imaging has also revolutionised x-ray use, with better image quality at lower doses. Education and training have also seen big improvements. Today, anyone working with radiation is better trained in safety protocols and kept up to date with the latest guidelines. Personal dosimeters are now routinely worn by staff to monitor exposure in real time, helping to ensure they remain well within safe limits.

While x-rays are still powerful tools in medicine, their use is much safer today, making a huge difference for the professionals who work with them every day. As we look forward to the challenges and changes in the next 50 years, I would like to wish RAD Magazine a very happy birthday and every success for the future.
