Assessment of the cervix and vagina in the routine transvaginal scan
Views of the cervix in a routine transvaginal scan are usually obtained when assessing the appearance and size of the uterus, and the vagina is visualised as the probe is first introduced, while in the introitus view. It is easy to overlook these structures and to concentrate mainly on assessing the uterus and the ovaries. However, focused interrogation of the cervix and vagina is invaluable in helping to detect a range of pathologies that may be the cause of common presenting symptoms such as dysfunctional bleeding and discharge. This article discusses how and why to improve imaging of the cervix and vagina, and presents images of detectable pathologies.
