Implementing sustainable healthcare at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
In 2020, the NHS committed to achieving net zero by 2045, highlighting that not only does climate change contribute to poor health, but that tackling climate change is crucial in tackling health inequalities (Delivering a Net Zero National Health Service). Radiology has a fundamental role to play in reducing healthcare associated emissions, as radiology has been estimated to account for 1% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Combined with pathology, radiology has been estimated to account for 9% of healthcare’s total carbon footprint, and is therefore a prime area for targeted sustainability initiatives.
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT) is one of the largest trusts in the UK, based across five London hospitals, and provides healthcare for nearly two million people in north-west London. At ICHT, we recognise the need for systemic change in tackling emissions and have implemented a series of initiatives and changes to try and put sustainability at the heart of what we do.
