Revolutionising care with value-based radiology: the impact of radiology referral management software with integrated clinical decision support

The concept relies on moving away from resourcing based on the volume of care delivered to resourcing based on the value of care delivered. The value of care is defined as the patient outcomes divided by the cost of care delivery. Diagnostic imaging is a key component of healthcare delivery and impacts enormously on patient outcomes, so it is vital that finite radiology resources are deployed appropriately and in the context of VBH. Low value radiology is the use of procedures or tests that provide little or no benefit to patients and can potentially cause harm, or result in unnecessary healthcare spending. Estimates of the occurrence of low value radiology vary but are typically estimated to represent between 20% and 50% of imaging studies. By embracing value-based radiology, we can move to a system where all investigations contribute positively to patient outcomes. In the context of these issues, innovative point-of-care clinical decision support tools (POC CDST) have been developed and are set to significantly improve radiology referrals and contribute positively to patient care outcomes
