Colorectal carcinoma is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer worldwide. It is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women and the fourth in men. The World Health Organization classifies colorectal carcinoma as a single entity and therefore much of the literature does not differentiate colon from rectal cancer. However, they are clearly very different diseases in terms of anatomy, diagnostic work-up and treatment response.
