Top healthcare science award goes expert at The Christie

Director of medical physics and engineering at The Christie Professor Ranald Mackay.
A leading physicist at The Christie has been named healthcare scientist of the year at the Healthcare Science Awards. Professor Ranald Mackay, director of medical physics and engineering at the specialist cancer centre in Withington, Manchester, collected the accolade from HRH Princess Anne at the 12th Chief Scientific Officer’s Annual Conference at the Royal Society in London.
The NHS England award celebrates an exceptional individual who has used their skills and scientific ability for a maximum patient or service user benefit, as recognised by their peers.
Professor Mackay, who has worked at The Christie for 23 years and has been instrumental in the development of proton beam therapy there, said: It was an honour to be given the award. There are thousands of healthcare scientists working in many fields in the NHS and to be selected for this award is a reflection of the excellent science that we do at The Christie.
It was all the more special to receive the award at The Royal Society from HRH Princess Anne.
