University of Derby unveils image reporting facility for realistic teaching of clinical workflow

News

The University of Derby has unveiled a new £107,000 state-of-the-art image reporting facility that is designed to replicate clinical workflow, to allow students to report images as they would in a real clinical imaging department.

Funded after a successful bid from Health Education England, the image reporting room offers 15 workstations, all with PACS and RIS software installed and featuring diagnostic-quality 6MP displays.

The room will be used for students on the university’s innovative PG Cert Image Reporting programme, which trains qualified radiographers in reporting images to help them achieve faster diagnoses for patients. It will also be used by pre-registration radiography students to enable them to gain valuable image interpretation skills, while ultrasound students will be able to hone their reporting skills.

Head of diagnostic imaging Emma Hyde said: “We are absolutely delighted with the new image reporting room, which will provide a fantastic learning facility for our reporting students, ultrasound students and pre-registration students alike and support them in their future roles within these fields.”

In order to provide students with a solid foundation to fulfil the requirements of an advanced practice role, the programme incorporates all four pillars of advanced practice, namely expert clinical practice, education, research, and leadership and management, into the module and assessment content.
