Spectral data is a CT game-changer at Ulster

Ulster Hospital in Belfast has acquired a Philips IQon Spectral CT scanner and is reducing contrast use as a result.  It features what is claimed to be the first spectral detector CT system built from the ground-up for spectral imaging.  The advanced technology offers advantages through colour quantification and provides the ability to characterise structures based on material content, helping provide clinicians with additional information for diagnosis.

Consultant radiologist Dr Peter Ball said: “Even though the IQon has only been installed recently, it has already changed the way we report CT.  The instant availability of spectral data without pre-planning has added a further level of confidence in reporting the full range of CT imaging.  We are reducing the amount of contrast we give patients and have reduced the need for rescanning or additional imaging.  The IQon is already proving to be a game-changer in CT.”
