First PETCT system of its kind installed at Manchester Royal Infirmary

News

Manchester Royal Infirmary received the world’s first Biograph Vision PETCT system from Siemens Healthineers and scanned its first patient on it in autumn last year.  The systems allows greater accuracy in the imaging and staging of patients to maintain efficient and sustainable care.

Acting directorate manager of the Nuclear Medicine Centre Andy Bradley said: “The Biograph Vision represents significant advances in technology, which will not only help us meet the ever-increasing demand for scans but bring several patient-related benefits.  Shorter scanning times will help elderly and sick patients and the superior image quality will result in better detection of disease.”

The Biograph Vision PETCT is used to diagnose and stage cancers and can help monitor the effectiveness of treatment for each patient. PETCT can also perform perfusion and viability studies of the heart, as well as advanced neuro imaging for disorders of the brain such as Alzheimer’s disease.
