Imaging equipment company Probo Medical has been providing an apprenticeship scheme for 17 years, offering employees an opportunity to master a trade alongside working and gaining experience in the industry.

Josh Simmons has graduated from Gloucester College with an HNC and apprenticeship in electrical and electronic engineering. He started in the ultrasound workshop as an apprentice in September 2016 where he developed his skills and passion for engineering. Two years later Simmons was servicing ultrasound systems in hospitals and veterinary surgeries across the UK, increasing his skills as he progressed. During this time he also attended college one day a week while completing a level three NVQ.

Simmons officially completed his HNC and apprenticeship in August 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic could not celebrate his achievements until November 2021 at his graduation at Gloucester Cathedral.

Six more apprentices are currently on the scheme. Ultrasound service manager Jon Kean started his career with Probo through the apprenticeship programme. He explained: “It is a great way of recruiting people to develop fully into qualified engineers. We are extremely proud of what Josh has accomplished and we are honoured to have him as part of our team.”

Managing director Trevor Howard added: “Well done Josh, it is great to have watched your progression throughout your apprenticeship. We are very proud of the success of our apprenticeship programme, particularly the fact that all former apprentices have remained with the business, with many progressing into new roles.”
