DIDS 2.0 will encompass the entire diagnostic journey, says Magentus

The Diagnostic Imaging Dataset (DID) has been part of the NHS since 2012, introduced to improve visibility of imaging activity and waiting times. Health technology company Magentus says that NHS England is moving towards a deeper understanding of the entire diagnostic journey, beyond data capturing activity to include pathways, referral patterns and timings. “This transition aligns with the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, which strengthens the role of diagnostics and community-based models of care. DIDS 2.0 enables richer analysis of variation and capacity, providing a foundational dataset for imaging networks and community diagnostic centres,” the company says.

The introduction of the new submission portal brings a more consistent approach to data validation, embedding expectations that data will be complete, structured and reliable. “As the dataset matures, reporting windows are expected to tighten, moving from a six-month submission period to three months within a year, with longer-term expectations for near real-time completeness,” Magentus continues. “This shift assumes that all patients are formally registered and identifiable within systems, prompting imaging providers to consider how existing workflows support consistent data capture. With clearer definitions for request dates, urgency, patient characteristics and examination details, these changes require system readiness and operational clarity, particularly where workflows differ across trusts.”

As the UK’s largest RIS provider of data for DIDS, Magentus says its focus has been to remove barriers to adoption, to ensure no trust is held back by technology. Imaging systems will need to support clearer referrals with standardised coding and reliable data.
