HLH study day

The BIR/HLH Lung Cancer Screening Study Day returns to London on Friday, December 11, 2026, bringing together leading voices from across the UK to explore the next phase of lung cancer screening.

Hosted by The HLH Imaging Group (HLH) in association with the British Institute of Radiology (BIR), and supporting the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, the annual study day has become an important multidisciplinary meeting point for professionals involved in the delivery, development and future direction of NHS Lung Cancer Screening (LCS).

Taking place at The Minster Building, London, this year’s programme reflects how far lung cancer screening has progressed. As national roll out gathers pace, the conversation is increasingly moving beyond whether screening works, towards how it can be delivered safely, consistently and effectively at scale.

The agenda is structured around three key themes: From Evidence to Action – Scaling Towards National Roll Out; Maintaining Quality at Scale; and Keeping Care Human.

The opening session will look at the changing LCS landscape, including Dr Richard Lee, an update on the NHSE National LCS Programme, national reporting protocol from Dr Anna Sharman, and Professor David Baldwin discussing how lessons from the UK roll out could inform screening internationally.

As services expand, maintaining quality becomes increasingly important. The second session will tackle some of the practical and governance challenges associated with scaling screening, covering reporting quality, radiation dose, medicolegal considerations and post-deployment surveillance of artificial intelligence.

The afternoon then shifts the focus towards people, decision-making and the human elements of screening. A keynote from Pete Reed OBE will explore what it takes to deliver something bigger than any one individual, followed by an interactive Screening Review Meeting – Ask Us Anything session with Dr Jude Babar and Dr Jonathan Rodrigues. The programme will also consider human interaction with AI, before closing with reflections on how technological progress can be balanced with keeping care human.

Throughout the day, interactive panel discussions will give delegates the opportunity to hear directly from experts involved in delivering LCS and to explore some of the real-world challenges faced by screening programmes.

For radiologists, respiratory physicians, radiographers, LCS programme managers, researchers, nurses and anyone involved in lung cancer screening, the study day offers a valuable opportunity to learn from those at the forefront of national delivery, exchange ideas with colleagues and consider what the next phase of screening should look like.

With lung cancer screening continuing to expand across England, collaboration and shared learning will be essential to ensuring that increased scale is matched by consistently high standards of care.
