Two operating theatres have been opened at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, offering young patients in the region a greater level of care. The jewel in the crown is considered to be an intra-operative MRI suite in one of the theatres, donated by The Children’s Hospital Charity.
Philips UKI supplied a Philips Ingenia 3.0T MR-OR (dual room setup of an Ingenia 3.0T suite and an operating room) for intra-operative MRI.
World Superbike champion 2004 and 2007 James Toseland, songwriter and recording artist Katie Melua and BBC presenter for news and sport Dan Walker performed the official opening ceremony.
Head of department for paediatric neurosurgery Dr Hesham Zaki said: “This is a massive step forward. Our new intra-operative 3.0T MRI theatre is full of innovations including the most up-to-date neuro-navigation equipment and it will allow us to achieve the best outcomes for children with brain tumours. The complete removal of tumours, that were previously inoperable is now a more realistic option.”
