Six mammography suites are added across Ireland to enhance tomosynthesis availability

Six Hologic 3Dimensions mammography systems have been installed by HSL as part of three hospital installations. Cork University Hospital has received three systems, two systems have gone to St James’s Hospital Dublin, while University Hospital Waterford has received one system.
“The orders formed part of a Health Service Executive (HSE) breast imaging tender, and installations by HSL’s team of skilled engineers are now complete. Applications training is also well underway,” explained diagnostic imaging territory manager Breidge Flood.
The Hologic 3Dimensions mammography system provides 2D and 3D images, a more comfortable examination for patients and enhanced workflow for mammographers. Four of the eight dedicated symptomatic breast centres in the HSE now have the capability of utilising tomosynthesis to aid early breast cancer detection.
“The introduction of tomosynthesis to our symptomatic service has simplified diagnostic work-up and increased accuracy,” said consultant radiologist at St James’s Hospital Dr Ronan McDermott. “The establishment of synthesised 2D mammography as a viable alternative to conventional digital mammography will allow us to achieve this goal with no additional dose to our patients.”
Each installation includes an Affirm tomosynthesis breast biopsy guidance system, a Brevera biopsy console offering real-time visualisation of core samples, as well as CAD and QUANTRA breast density software.
