Chair makes breast screening more accessible for disabled patients at Broadgreen Hospital

Broadgreen Hospital mammography

Superintendent radiographer Ali Guest and her team at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool, have received a motorised mammography chair that is expected to improve the way mammograms are performed for patients who cannot stand. Supplied by Wolverson X-ray, the REAL 8200 Plus EL Clinic mammography chair helps the patient achieve correct posture and also facilitates a good working environment for staff.

Since a mammography examination can be an emotional experience for the patient the chair makes examinations as efficient and as pleasant as possible. It can also be easier to get images right if the patient is in a stable, ergonomically correct, seated position. For more time-consuming examinations, the patient can be seated comfortably and relaxed.

“This specially designed positioning chair will allow the breast screening service to become more accessible for disabled women,” said Guest. “It will increase the chances of obtaining a good quality image for those who cannot stand during their mammogram.”

The chair was delivered to the Alexandra Wing in September, replacing an old mammography positioning chair that had no motorised movements and was becoming increasingly difficult to use. The team thanked R Charity, which helped raise the funds needed to purchase the chair.
