Trainees practice basics before clinical placement

With Toshiba ultrasound specialist Karen Michaels are advanced practitioners from St James’s University Hospital ultrasound department Vikki Shepherd, Emma Hollings, team leader Lis Ramsey, Emily Coysh, Heather Child, Davina Bhanabhai and Claire Harrison.
Ultrasound trainees at Leeds and West Yorkshire Radiology Academy are undergoing initial orientation with a recently acquired Toshiba Aplio 300 ultrasound machine, to learn about use of controls and image optimisation. This is supported by teaching from an expert faculty, designed to develop understanding of how the image is produced, basic technique, ultrasound anatomy, normal appearances and image interpretation.
Consultant sonographers Jane Smith and Terry Humphrey lead ultrasound training at the academy. Smith said: “The Aplio 500 and 300 both combine an excellent image with accessible functionality. This is ideal for basic training and assessment, allowing junior radiologists to become proficient in image optimisation and interpretation.”
