Mindray UK workshop creates point-of-care ultrasound super users

30 enthusiastic anaesthetists will be able to enhance their regional anaesthesia skills after successfully completing an accredited ultrasound workshop on regional anaesthesia run by Mindray UK and faculty from Frimley Park Hospital.

Held on December 1, 2023 at Mindray UK’s Watford office the workshop included academic ultrasound essentials and practical training for eight different blocks for surgical procedures, including:

Total knee replacement
Total hip replacement
Rib fractures
Breast surgery
Shoulder / clavicle / proximal humerus
Limb trauma
Lower limb surgery below knee (or if ankle, amputation)
Abdominal surgery
Neuraxial scanning at lumbar level

Delegates trained in small groups which rotated between dedicated workstations. Each workstation had expert facilitators who used Mindray POCUS systems to demonstrate block techniques and conduct the practical training for delegates.

There was even time to try out cutting-edge smart tools that can improve the speed and accuracy of ultrasound procedures and diagnostics, such as the eSpacial Navi, which provides enhanced needle visualisation and trajectory using magnetic induction technology.

The course content was developed by Dr Madan Narayanan and Dr Agata Kapuscinska at Frimley Park Hospital. It was accredited for six Continued Professional Development (CPD) points by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. To gain accreditation, courses must undergo a robust review including a technical content check, to ensure it is appropriate for the CPD needs of non-trainee doctors.

Dr Kapuscinska said: “It’s a pleasure to continue working with Mindray to develop more ultrasound ‘super users’ through hands-on workshops. The feedback has been excellent. Delegates really valued the variety of block techniques they could practice, the content quality, and the extensive time dedicated to hands-on training.”

All proceeds from the event have gone to African Mission Healthcare, The British Red Cross, and Sneh Sawali Care Centre.
