Motion in myocardial perfusion PET

Myocardial perfusion PET is a well established technique for assessing obstructive coronary artery and coronary microvascular diseases. It has been shown to be superior to SPECT imaging in image quality, prognostic information, scan time and lower radiation dose for both the patient and operators. Through the creation of dynamic images, PET also provides the ability to assess myocardial blood flow. Several radionuclide tracers are used including rubidium-82, nitrogen-13 ammonia and oxygen-15 water. Rubidium-82 is the most common tracer used worldwide due to convenient on-site generator production. Cardiac PET is widespread throughout the United States, where it is performed in more than 300 centres, whereas in the UK it is a little more modest with only four locations currently performing this technique – all of which use rubidium-82 as the tracer.
