Students achieve scanning competence on simulator

At the University of the West of England are Allied Health Professions head of department Marc Griffiths, ultrasound programme manager Vivien Gibbs, Medaphor ceo Stuart Gall and senior lecturer Rita Phillips.

The ultrasound team at the University of the West of England, Bristol, has taken delivery of a ScanTrainer ultrasound scanning simulator from Cardiff-based Medaphor.

Students will be able to practise scanning technique at the beginning of their training in a classroom setting rather than learning on real patients.  The state-of-the-art simulator is said to be one of only three in the world which has both transvaginal and transabdominal applications.  A haptic device, which replicates the force-fields experienced when scanning patients, enables the students to experience live scanning under tuition in a safe environment.
