A new radiotherapy centre is to open near Glasgow next year and Varian Medical Systems has been selected to equip the department, with an order placed for four TrueBeam medical linear accelerators.

Two of the systems will replace older machines at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow.  The hospital treats more than 7,000 patients each year on 11 Varian medical linacs and has a catchment area covering half the population of Scotland.

“These machines represent the latest in linear accelerator technology so we can extend the range of treatments to more patients,” said head of radiotherapy physics Garry Currie.  “The planned opening of the facility in Monklands will be the next step forward for our patients in the west of Scotland in delivering high quality and effective radiotherapy treatments.”
