Implementation of a national training programme for CTC

The National CT Colonography Training and Accreditation Programme (NCTCTAP) was created to enhance and improve CT colonography (CTC) training in the UK. The role of ultrasound in treating liver cancer

The diagnostic uses of ultrasound in liver cancer are well established. Ultrasound plays a key role in surveillance, biopsy and, increasingly, in characterisation, with the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). The treatment of liver cancer using ultrasound is perhaps less well appreciated. Ultrasound is used in the treatment of liver cancer in two ways: firstly […]

Innovations and developments in vascular ultrasound

The Doppler effect was first described by Christian Andreas Doppler in 1842. However, it was not until the mid-1950s that Doppler shift techniques were first used to monitor heart and peripheral blood vessel pulsations. The further development of Doppler imaging technologies with the detection of blood flow through the heart and peripheral vessels took place […]

Non-FDG PET tracers in oncology: the story so far

The role of radionuclide molecular imaging in oncology with 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG) is well established. There is ample evidence to support the role of 18F-FDG PETCT in various clinical scenarios and cancer types. However, there has been a phenomenal expansion in non-FDG PET radiopharmaceuticals for use in clinical oncology. 68Ga is a well established radionuclide […]

The emerging role of [18F]FDG-PETCT in patients with breast cancer

Breast cancer staging is a complex process, mainly due to the heterogeneous phenotype of the tumour. In early breast cancer, assessed by primary tumour size and nodal status, contrast-enhanced CT thorax, abdomen and pelvis (CECT) for staging is not indicated unless there are clinical symptoms of metastatic disease because the risk of distant spread in […]

Setting up a one stop shop PETCT and ceCT service for management of patients with lymphoma

Hybrid imaging is an integral part of nuclear medicine services. The possibility to combine morphologic and functional data has changed patient pathways and had a major impact in the diagnosis and management of oncology patients. CT using contrast enhancement (ceCT) is an important tool to monitor anatomical change. However, with lymphoma imaging, delineation of pathologic […]

Congenital and developmental abnormalities of the breast and their clinical implications

The human breast is an epidermal appendage derived from apocrine glands. The adult breast base overlies the second to sixth ribs in the midclavicular line and lies anterior to the deep pectoral fascia, overlying the pectoralis major muscle and the serratus anterior muscle inferolaterally. It is enclosed in a split of the superficial fascia and […]

Tackling workforce shortages across breast screening and symptomatic services

The significant workforce challenges facing breast screening and symptomatic services, covering both medical and radiographic staff groups, have been highlighted in a number of studies. For example, a survey of the four-tier radiographic workforce was published by Public Health England (PHE – now part of NHS England) in November 2016. This analysed current staffing, vacancy […]
